For shipping scrap carbide or hss less than 450 lbs—we recommend the United States Post Office’s Flat Rate box.
US Post Office Priority Mail Boxes
We suggest that you ship the scrap carbide by US Priority Mail, in 40-60 lb increments, using the 11 x 8.5 x 5.5, flat-rate, Priority Mail box, that can be picked up from your local post office for free.
The rate is flat at $9.80 for any weight under 70 lbs, but we strongly suggest keeping it to 55 lbs or less. You need to use the standard,
11 x 8.5 x 5.5 flat rate box to get the $9.80 flat rate.
The new, larger, 12 x 12 x 5 flat rate box is not necessary for carbide, although it is good for high speed steel, which is half the density of carbide. It costs $3.00 more; and we will only reimburse $9.80 if you use the new box for carbide.
We also recommend that you purchase insurance and delivery confirmation, which we do not reimburse. We usually reimburse the $9.80 flat rate for each box shipped, as long as your shipment exceeds 40 lbs.
When packing the box, place the carbide in “inside” containers like covered coffee cans, paint cans, plywood boxes, or tripled, heavy-duty, freezer zip-lock bags wrapped in packing tape (yes, we absolutely mean 3 bags).
Think of the inside container as a bowling ball on steroids. Use tightly crumpled newspaper or other cushioning between and around the inside container(s) so that they are as immobile as possible during shipment.

The whole idea is to stop the carbide from moving in the inside container and to stop the inside container from moving inside the flat-rate box.
NEVER USE PACKING PEANUTS OR SHIP LOOSELY PACKED

CARBIDE—just thrown in the box, the good old scrap carbide will just break through. See our rogues gallery

Scrap carbide and HSS need to be separated from each other and be clean, free of foreign material. See SparkTest for more on HSS
